    Dear Highlands families,

Highlands school cafeterias continue to meet tough federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students with all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.  Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school breakfast and lunch!

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size.  School lunches have met additional standards requiring:

    Age-appropriate calorie limits

Each student should take servings of vegetables and/or fruit (students must take at least one 1/2 cup fruit or vegetable) to make a reimbursable meal.

Offering varieties of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes

Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)

Whole grain rich breads and pastas

    Less sodium

We’re always working to offer Highlands students healthier and tastier choices for our school meals. We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria. To get more facts about school meals, visit www.TrayTalk.org.

    Thank you!
