Students Donate to KDKA Turkey Fund

On Nov. 22, 2010, KDKA anchor Rick Dayton visited Heights Elementary to accept a $1,045 donation to the KDKA Turkey Fund.  Student Council officers Cristofer White, Jillian Guthrie, Olivia Ahr and Vincent Nguyen presented Mr. Dayton with an oversized, symbolic check for the donation amount.  PNC Bank agreed to match any Turkey Fund donations of $50 or more, so the Heights donation doubled to $2,090.

The Heights Student Council, under the direction of second grade teacher Mrs. Terry McKrisky, initiated the turkey fund drive with a goal of raising $1,000 in a week. As an incentive, students received a ticket for each dollar they donated that was used for a chance to win one of five gift baskets.  The items for the basket raffle were donated by the Student Council, parents and staff members.  At the end of the week, students surpassed the goal, and five lucky ones went home with baskets of goodies.

Contributions to the KDKA Turkey Fund help provide a Thanksgiving dinner to a struggling family in our area. Money raised goes to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and will be distributed throughout the KDKA-TV viewing area including Allegheny and 11 surrounding counties.
