Spanish III Hummingbird Robots with Housing Unit
by Señora Proaño
Congratulations to the High School World Language Department, which received a $250 grant from the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) supplies.
The grant funds will be used to buy robotics and craft supplies used in Spanish and German I, II and III for STEAM projects. For example, as part of the Spanish/German I School Life unit, students draw enlarged maps of the school and code Finch robots in the target language to move through their class schedule. Students plan a trip to Spanish and German-speaking countries, draw enlarged maps of their respective regions and code Finch robots to move from country to country as part of the Spanish/German II Travel unit. Building on their experience with Finch robots in their first two years of language study, Spanish/German III students use Hummingbird robots in the Housing unit by coding them to make parts of their model homes light up and move with sensors.
The grant is expected to benefit at least 240 students on average per year. Thank you to PASR for supporting the World Language Department in continuing to integrate STEAM into the World Language Classroom.
