High School Students Get Active in New Fitness Center

10/30/2024

Thanks to a 2-year collaborative effort among the Highlands Administration, School Board and Physical Education Department, students are “breaking a sweat” in a newly renovated Fitness Center at Highlands High School!

Highlands Student Service Director Dr. Amber Dean was instrumental in helping the district secure a SEEKS Grant through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit to fund the Fitness Center renovation. “A big thank you to Highlands Athletic Director Katie Jo Stobert, High School Principal Mike Toole, and the Highlands Administration and School Board for all their support and assistance in making this a reality for our students,” said High School phys ed teacher Luke Pollick.

With the improved space and equipment now in place, the High School was able to incorporate a Personal Fitness class into the curriculum and offer an After-School Lifting and Workout program for all interested students. The program is held Monday-Thursday from 2:30-3:30pm.

In addition, the Athletic Department created a schedule so that all Highlands athletic teams will be able to utilize the Fitness Center. “The use of the Fitness Center not only helps student athletes improve, but it also builds team unity throughout the year,” said Pollick.
