STEM challenge

stem teamThis spring, the Pennsylvania Governor's office challenged students to create a universal technology which could help Pennsylvania residents. Under the direction of Highlands High School AP Chemistry teacher Mrs. Catherine Stack, students Lucas Bernstein, Lily Biernesser, Elliot Vunora, Riley Therrien, Carrah Scardina, Jordyn Sobotka, Braedon Paz, Caden Kowalski and Ryan Pfaff engineered and created a working prototype for an absolute position track pad for the visually impaired.

Over 75 teams across the state submitted a final project, and Highlands was selected as one of the top 20 teams to present at the State Championships in Harrisburg on May 8! The 2024 Highlands STEM team, comprised of Lucas Bernstein, Lily Biernesser, Elliot Vunora and Riley Therrien, presented their project to a panel of six judges. After speeches from the Secretary of Education, a software engineer/AI genius, and a cosmetic chemist, the judges' points were totaled, and...our Highlands team earned the title of "Best in Technology" for the entire state of Pennsylvania!

Congratulations to the Highlands AP Chemistry students and their state title!
