HES Students, Families Celebrate Reading with Red-Carpet Event
04/03/2024
On March 25, a special red-carpet event was held at Highlands Elementary to celebrate the culmination of the Children’s Choice Awards/Battle of the Books, a team reading competition against peers that was open to all HES 3rd and 4th grade students.
Given a list of eight challenging books provided by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU), the 21 students who participated in the competition were required to read at least two of the books between November and March. They could read all eight if they were so inspired!
The students met during lunch period with K-8 Gifted Program Coordinator Mrs. Rebecca Mentecky and at the end of the school day before dismissal. Students then voted for their favorite book to win the Children's Choice Award, which was The Book That No One Wanted to Read by Richard Ayoade and Tor Freeman.
Throughout the evening, the participants were able to share their love of reading and had a comprehension knowledge competition called The Battle of the Books. The winning team was the Book Masters!
All the participants were also awarded a field trip this Spring to attend AIU’s The Battle of the Books to compete against other school districts.
The coordinators and sponsors of the competition and red-carpet event were Mrs. Laurie Malcolm, HES Library Media Specialist, and Mrs. Mentecky.
Special thanks to 5th grader JB Hood for creating the questions for The Battle of the Books!
