District Honors Board of Directors for School Board Recognition Month

01/18/2023

During the January 17, 2023 Highlands School Board Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Monique Mawhinney, along with students and staff, presented the Highlands School Board of Directors with gifts of appreciation and tributes in honor of January's National School Board Recognition Month.

Prior to the meeting, district and building administrators celebrated the Board with a dinner in their honor, which was coordinated and prepared by the district's Food Service Department under the direction of Stacey Waffensmith. Prior to dinner, entertainment was provided by the three jazz ensembles under the direction of Matthew Beresik. The High School Honors Choir, under the direction of Michael Zeiler, began the board meeting with The Star-Spangled Banner.

Superintendent Dr. Monique Mawhinney recognized and commended the nine for the countless volunteer hours they dedicate to serving the Highlands community as board directors. Board directors experience challenging and complex responsibilities of board business, including adopting policy, voting on budgets, evaluating school security issues and reviewing hiring decisions. The Highlands School Board is committed to making decisions that are in the best interest of our students, schools and the community.

Among the gifts of appreciation were journals and cards presented by Kindergarten teacher Melodi Cochran from the HECC staff and students, paintings of trees created by 1st grade artists at Highlands Elementary School coordinated by teacher Kristine Hrivnak, personalized wooden yard signs made by Jacob Emminger's tech ed students at the Middle School, and wood-framed mirrors with an etched H logo created by Mike Santucci's advanced tech ed students. Dr. Mawhinney & Assistant Superintendent Dr. Cathleen Cubelic represented the Administrative Team and presented each board director with a gift of appreciation and a framed recognition certificate.

Please join us in thanking these nine Highlands School Board of Directors for volunteering their time and talents for the betterment of public education in the Highlands community: President - Bobbie Neese, Vice President - Nicole Kocon, Kristie Babinsack, Laura Butler, Kelli Canonge, Ashley Javier, Debra Lehew and Judy Wisner and Gene Witt.
