HES Students Use Bee Bots & Books in Collaborative Activity
At Highlands Elementary School, students in Mr. Andrew Lynch's computer classes are learning how people can program robots to perform a task or function through the use of Bee Bots, which are programmable, easy-to-operate robots.
Through a hands-on, pirate-themed STEM lesson in the media center, students collaborated and problem-solved together to write and debug coding sequences to successfully navigate their "Pirate Ship Bot" through student-created obstacle grids in order to get to the "treasure"!
HES librarian Mrs. Kristen Gettens and Community Library of Allegheny Valley librarian Mrs. Susan Wilson also integrated Language Arts into the lesson by teaching the students context clues to understand new vocabulary that pertained to pirates using the books A Pirate's Guide to First Grade by James Preller and Henry and Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi.
