High School Hosts Mental Health-Focused Assembly

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five children ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition.

In an effort to shed light on mental health awareness and offer support to our students, Highlands High School counselors invited Jordan Corcoran, creator of Listen, Lucy, to present an assembly about acceptance, self-love, self-worth and anti-bullying to the entire student body at Highlands High School on March 10.

One of several speakers from the Listen, Lucy Presents program, Jordan encouraged students to be less judgmental and offer a more accepting environment around the mental health stigma. She also shared her own experiences and coping techniques dealing with generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Jordan's goal in sharing her story is to help people understand each other, realize they are not alone, and to not be afraid to ask for help. Students should especially utilize the many resources offered through the Highlands High School counseling office. Jordan also invited students to visit her website, listenlucy.org, to read about other people's struggles and/or to share their own, as writing could be a helpful coping technique.

Check out some of the key points Jordan delivered at the assembly in the video below.
