    A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

    May 11, 2020

    Highlands Families,

I hope this message finds you all healthy and safe. I want to thank you for your ongoing patience and support over these past two months. Your resiliency has been nothing but impressive during this unprecedented time. I would like to take a moment to provide you with some updates.

As you know, Governor Wolf announced that Allegheny County will move into the Yellow Phase on May 15t. In order to remain in compliance with the guidelines set forth in the Yellow Phase, all buildings and facilities within the Highlands School District will remain closed. This includes all outside facilities such as the track and tennis courts.

The Administration is currently working on a plan for teachers and students to gather any personal belongings that remain in classrooms or lockers. By now, you have received a one call from your child's principal regarding the gathering of items from lockers. Parents, please have your child complete the Locker Item Return Form that is available online, so that individual plans can be made for pick-up of those items. If your child has a band instrument, please note that on the form as well. Parents of children at the Early Childhood Center, you do not need to complete this form. Ms. Perlik will be contacting you to make alternative arrangements with you.

For the parents of our seniors, please be aware that sometime this week our administrators and teachers will be distributing yard signs for our seniors in an effort to recognize them and let them know we are thinking about them during this challenging time. In addition, we will be giving them their caps and gowns while adhering to the social distancing guidelines. We are very excited to see them! Principals Mr. Mort and Mr. Bennis will make a special one call once the delivery plans are finalized.

Finally, I will continue to share additional information regarding plans for summer programming, prom and graduation as the Governor continues to lift stay at home orders and revise social distancing guidelines.

I hope you all have a wonderful week. Stay strong.

    Dr. Mawhinney, Superintendent
