The Highlands Class of 2023 Officers unveiled and dedicated a memorial plaque at the Highlands Community Center in honor of our community's fallen hero, Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire, on the day the district marked its first Chief McIntire Day - January 3, 2024.
Highlands Superintendent Dr. Monique Mawhinney welcomed and delivered heartfelt remarks to those in attendance at the unveiling, including Chief McIntire's family and friends, community members, police officers, and district employees and board directors. The 2023 Class Officers - Nick McQuade (President), Luke Vunora (Vice President), Zachary Dunlap (Secretary) and Kassidy Cambal (Treasurer) unveiled the memorial plaque, which was the HHS Class of 2023 gift (see video below).
The plaque reads, "In Loving Memory of Chief Justin McIntire, who proudly served our community and demonstrated courage and selflessness every day that he woke up and chose to protect us." The plaque will be installed on the exterior of the Highlands Community Center near the main entrance doors.
Special thanks to HHS senior class sponsors Mrs. Sherry Armstrong and Mrs. Mindy Eckenrod for assisting with the unveiling, and to Food Service Director Stacey Waffensmith, head cook Tammy Jones and Rebecca Wygonik for the event's light refreshments.
Earlier in the day, HSD students and staff remembered Chief McIntire by wearing a memorial shirt or something blue, ABC Transit school buses were adorned with a black ribbon, and local police greeted students during arrival.
