Kindergarten Engages in Learning Activities, End-of-Year Fun
During the month of May and the first week of June, Highlands Early Childhood Center Kindergarten students engaged in many creative lessons and fun activities. Special thanks to Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Melodi Cochran, Mrs. Shelly Pacek, Mrs. Amy Lynch, Miss Carly Hines, Mrs. Krista Yount, Mrs. Amy Yeckel, Mrs. Cindy Smith and Mrs. Candice Gourley for providing these unique and special moments for the Kindergarteners! And, a big shout out to the Highlands K-4 PTO for their support throughout the year! Check out the photo galleries below!
Landforms & "Dirt" Activities
All of the students participated in a culminating activity reviewing the earth’s landforms. They made an edible map using blue icing for bodies of water (oceans, lakes, rivers), Hershey Kisses for mountains, a vanilla wafer for an island, chocolate chips for hills, and graham crackers for plains and valleys. The kids had a blast and got to eat it when finished! In a separate activity, the students made "dirt" pudding and added a little wiggly friend as part of their "Mixed Up" alphabet countdown (D is for dirt). They talked about how the earth is made of dirt and soil. Check out the videos below as well!
2D & 3D Shapes Activities
Kindergarten's last STEM module focused on 2D and 3D Shapes. Every day, students explored different ways to make shapes with a variety of materials; using items such as pattern block shapes, straws, play-doh, and food (ice cream cones, cookies, crackers, etc.).
Last Week of School & Step Up Day
Kindergarteners got to celebrate the last week of school with outdoor activities, yummy treats and a trip to visit first grade classrooms at the "big school", Highlands Elementary School, as part of the district's Step Up Day experience.
