7th Graders Use Google Earth for Virtual Field Trips Around the World
Highlands Middle School 7th Grade Ruby Team and Emerald Team World Cultures students embarked on virtual field trips by utilizing Google Earth, a geobrowser that accesses satellite and aerial imagery, topography, ocean depths, and other geographic data over the internet to represent the Earth as a 3D globe.
Students selected a natural wonder that they found most interesting, such as Mt. Everest, the Great Barrier Reef, Victoria Falls, etc., and used Google Earth to explore these regions. Students also navigated a multitude of print and digital sources while recognizing how technology can enable us to connect even during a global pandemic.
After their journeys were completed, they designed "Instagram posts" to document their experiences, including "photographs" and facts about their trip. They used their posts to teach their classmates about the natural wonder they "traveled" to for their adventure!
Special thanks to 7th Grade World Cultures teachers Mrs. Kala Lenart and Ms. Tracy Eck for developing this unique and creative lesson!
