Highlands Elementary Hosts Agency by Design Pittsburgh Cohort

Highlands Elementary School recently welcomed educators from across Western PA as a host site for the Agency by Design Pittsburgh cohort. HES library media specialist Tiffany Quade and art teacher Rebecca Grubbs are members of the cohort, which participates in monthly visits to public and private schools, as well as education-focused organizations throughout the region. These visits provide opportunities to explore maker-centered learning and innovative educational practices in a variety of settings.

During their visit, cohort members toured Highlands Elementary classrooms and observed the engaging, student-centered learning experiences taking place throughout the building. Guests had the opportunity to see how creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving are integrated into daily instruction.

A highlight of the visit was the Design Challenge, an interactive experience that paired visiting educators with students to address a real-world school-based challenge. Design Challenges may focus on topics such as PBIS initiatives, STEM problem-solving, or reimagining how school spaces are used.

For this challenge, Highlands Elementary invited its third-grade RAMbassadors to participate. Students and educators worked together to reimagine the school’s auditorium balcony space, brainstorming ideas that were both practical and appealing to students. Groups collaborated to develop student-centered solutions and presented their ideas to the full cohort.

“This is such a great opportunity for us as educators to get ideas of what other districts are working towards to bring back to our district, as well as sharing and showcasing the amazing learning happening right here in our own schools,” said Mrs. Grubbs.

Thank you to Mrs. Grubbs for the photos and details of the event!
