Destruction of School Records

Retention and Destruction of Special Education, Gifted, and Section 504 Records

Highlands School District maintains student records in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and records retention requirements.

Special education records are generally maintained until six (6) years after a student is no longer eligible for special education services or reaches the age at which eligibility for services ends. After this period, records that are no longer necessary for educational purposes may be destroyed through physical destruction or the removal of personally identifiable information.

Prior to the destruction of records, former students and parents/guardians may request copies of records maintained by the District by contacting the Student Services Department.

The District will maintain permanent student records, including information such as the student's name, address, phone number, grades, attendance record, classes attended, grade level completed, and year completed, in accordance with state and federal requirements.
