School Curricula                   

All students in grades K-5 have full curricula for every major subject area. 

 

Language Arts is taught using the Houghton Mifflin Legacy of Literacy Reading Program.  This program is organized into themes and integrates spelling, vocabulary, reading and writing.

 

Mathematics is taught in all grades using the Everyday Math program.  This spiraling curriculum is used as concepts and skills are introduced, developed, and secured as the students achieve mastery.  

 

Science classes are taught using a hands-on approach with Science Companion in grades K-5.  Students investigate and observe scientific processes and methods throughout the year as they complete modules on different topics. 

 

Health emphasizes Conflict Resolution and Bully Prevention in a curriculum that is combined with the curricula of Science and Physical Education.

 

Social Studies utilizes the textbook Adventures in Time and Place with each grade to study different aspects of society, people, and places. 

 

Homework

For students in grades 1 5, homework is usually given every day.  Occasionally, kindergartners will receive homework.  The purpose of homework is to reinforce the lesson and practice applying skills learned in class.  Students generally are not given homework assignments that would take hours to complete or that introduce new information.  If a child has on-going difficulties with homework, parents are encouraged to check with the classroom teacher to clarify the expectations on homework.

 

Looping

The innovative practice of LOOPING will take place in fourth and fifth grade. Looping means for our families, students, and teachers, that at Fawn, we are keeping groups of students together for two or more years with the same teacher. In practice, that means this years fifth grade teachers will be next years fourth grade teachers. This years fourth grade teachers will follow or Loop with their class to fifth grade. 

 

The benefits of looping can be substantial. Can you imagine the amount of instructional time our students will gain because teachers and students do not need to start the year from scratch? Students, Teachers, and Families will already know each other, classroom procedures, rules, and learning expectations. The impact is an overall gain in actual learning time throughout the year. By spending more time with their students, teachers posses an in-depth understanding learning needs. Promoting a differentiated approach to instruction and learning for our students. Looping can have positive effects on student behavior and their attitude about school.  

 

Project Connect

When students appear to be struggling in the classroom, either with academics or behavior expectations, the teachers focus on finding ways to help the child experience greater success.  The teachers begin by making adjustments in the classroom, either to the instruction or to the amount of extra time spent helping the student.  If that does not seem to help the student, the teacher can refer the student to the Project Connect Team. 

 

Project Connect is provided to connect many levels of service to the child by having classroom teachers and support teachers discuss each students individual needs.  The first thing required is permission from the family to begin Project Connect for the student.  The Project Connect Team has meetings every other week for the teachers to plan additional ways to help the student.  Parent meetings are scheduled to assist in setting goals for the student that can be achieved in the classroom and to review the childs progress.
