Ben & Alicia Kostka Alum Invited to White House

Highlands High School Class of '99 graduate Ben Kostka, an operations officer for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 12 in Virginia, was selected to attend a dinner on February 29, 2012 at the White House that honored Armed Forces members who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and their families.

Kostka has been in the Navy nine years and has completed three deployments in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom; two to Iraq serving as officer in charge of an EOD detachment and a riverine detachment, and one to Afghanistan serving as the operations officer for Task Force Paladin Southwest. Kostka has earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal and the Afghan Campaign Medal for his service during his deployments.

According to the White House, nearly 200 people were invited to the formal dinner. The group of invitees represents America; they come from each state and territory in the nation and come from diverse backgrounds, all services and all ranks. Kostka felt honored to represent the Navy's EOD community and the state of Pennsylvania.
